Google Earth Rocks!

In my last post, I included a map of the Expo just so that I could gauge where the buildings are today. I then started thinking (too much), and thought what a great idea it would be to make a transparency of a current street map and then lay it over the 1901 map to help aid in the driving tomorrow. I don't need a whole 100 sheets of transparency paper, so I tried to look on Google Earth for maybe, at the most, a great street map. Instead of that, there's this AWESOME tool where you can overlay an image onto the map! It's perfect and exactly what I needed! I matched up then the New York State Building to the present day Buffalo & Erie Country Historical Society, the Albright Knox Art Gallery and the Hoyt Lake Boat House and Casino. Tah-Dah! The map, though small on the print-out, is perfect! Even the lake and bay match up pretty well! I'm so excited for doing some detective work tomorrow! Also, I'm not sure if it's just coincidence or what, but it seems like the streets in the Expo match up with current streets -- for example along the Midway there is a street. Maybe after the Fair was over, people just began to build houses on the existing streets there?

P.S. I'm trying to figure out a way to include a map photo of the Google Earth image on this blog, but so far it's not working. If I hopefully figure it out, I will post immediately!
